Over the course of three days (25th-27th September 2015) Mauritius Red Cross (CRMu) organised a workshop aimed at creating and implementing its contingency plan. ‘Preparedness’ and logistical managers from PIROI, based in Reunion Island, joined forces with teams from Mauritius Red Cross to support this initiative.
In 2015, as part of its Disaster Risk Management programme, PIROI launched a project to strengthen the capacities of Mauritius Red Cross. This programme, called ‘Building safer and more resilient communities in Mauritius and Rodrigues islands’, covers the establishment of a range of advocacy, risk reduction and preparedness/disaster management activities in partnership with CRMu to enable the latter to continuously improve its disaster response. The development of a contingency plan, using tools developed by the IFRC, is one of the first steps that PIROI wanted to initiate. The process started with a workshop where the IFRC pack was presented to CRMu, followed by numerous work groups aimed at developing a Cyclone Contingency Plan. Feedback about the validated Action Plan was submitted to CRMu’s Governance at the end of the workshop. To promote knowledge sharing between the Indian Ocean National Societies, Mr Roy Nibourette, DM of the Seychelles Red Cross Society, was also present as a workshop co-facilitator. A second contingency plan finalisation/feedback workshop will take place in May or June 2016.
