Mauritius Red Cross marks World Environment Day

[20 June 2016]

World Environment Day is held every 5th June, and this year its theme was ‘Technological innovations for sustainable development and environmental protection’.

Mauritius Red Cross is sensitive to environmental issues, and on this occasion it partnered with the country’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre (NDRRMC) to run various information stands from June 2nd to 5th.

This special initiative allowed the general public to discover Mauritius Red Cross Society’s prevention, preparedness, and disaster response activities. Facilitators from the National Society also carried out introductions to first aid and risk reduction. Young visitors were able to play Dood’s ‘Hazards & Ladders’ game, Dood being the dodo who is the Mauritian disaster risk reduction mascot. Players learnt how to better understand the natural risks that surround them while having fun.

The game, which has been specially designed for Mauritius, was created as part of the project ‘Building safer and more resilient communities in Mauritius and Rodrigues Island’ launched in June 2015 with support from PIROI. This project allows Mauritius Red Cross to expand its outreach activities, thus increasing public preparedness and raising awareness of natural disasters and the foreseeable impacts of climate change.
