Regional Workshop on Disaster Risk Management

[23 April 2018]

As part of its Disaster Risk Management regional programme, on 16 and 17 April 2018 PIROI held its annual DRM workshop. It was attended by the Secretaries General and Disaster Risk Management Officers of PIROI-member National Societies as well as an IFRC representative.

This year the workshop included thematic sessions on disaster risk reduction, climate change, epidemic response, and cash transfer programming. The event provided an opportunity to review National Societies’ activities during the preceding period, and to identify their priorities in terms of training and capacity building with regard to the PIROI Center.

Some of the conclusions and commitments undertaken are as follows:

  • Disaster risk reduction (DRR): creation of a methodological handbook on disaster risk reduction and a Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (VCA) pack for the Indian Ocean islands.
  • Epidemics: opportunity to develop health risks awareness programmes in the region.
  • Training courses:
    • A RDRT Health course will be held in November 2018.
    • A ‘Natural hazards and climate change’ technical training course will be offered in 2019.
    • Regional Cash Transfer Programming training will take place at least once a year.
    • Some training courses provided by PIROI will be hosted in other member countries.
  • IFRC: special attention should be paid to ‘Movement’ coordination with the impending installation of the ‘Indian Ocean Islands and Djibouti’ (IOID) cluster in Madagascar.

The regional Disaster Risk Management workshop was followed on 18-21 April by practical training on the use of cash transfer programming in humanitarian response.
