A contingency warehouse to respond to disasters in Rodrigues

[11 January 2019]

Mauritius Red Cross and PIROI recently completed construction of a warehouse to meet contingencies on the outlying Mauritian island of Rodrigues. The inauguration of the building, located in the district of Mont-Plaisir, took place on 15th December in the presence of the Deputy Chief Commissioner of Rodrigues, the President of Mauritius Red Cross, and teams from Mauritius Red Cross and PIROI.

Financed with support from the Australian Cooperation Program, this new warehouse will strengthen the capacity of Mauritius Red Cross to respond to natural disasters in Rodrigues. The building has been prepositioned with a contingency stock including emergency shelter kits, camp beds, tents, electrical generators, and blankets.

The construction of the warehouse forms part of the ’Building safer and resilient communities in Mauritius and Rodrigues’ disaster preparedness and response project that PIROI has supported since 2015.

The Indian Ocean Regional Intervention Platform now has 8 contingency warehouses throughout the south-west Indian Ocean. (Reunion Island, Mayotte, Union of the Comoros, Madagascar (x 2), Mauritius, Seychelles and Rodrigues).
