Regional training of Red Cross/Red Crescent emergency response team members

Formation SURGE
From 19 to 26 November, PIROI trained, in coordination with the IFRC, emergency response team members in assessing the needs of the affected population and planning and implementing a humanitarian response operation. A total of 19 volunteers and staff from National Societies (Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Reunion and Mayotte) were trained to support large-scale emergency operations in the region.

Produce drinking water in emergency situations

In the event of a disaster, PIROI's mission is to ensure that the population has access to drinking water. This is why the Platform has several water treatment units, pre-positioned in warehouses in the region. Since September, the inventory of the equipment and the start-up of the motorized pumps have been carried out in Madagascar, Mauritius and the Comoros. These activities have allowed both to verify that the equipment is operational for emergency deployment and to upgrade the technical knowledge of specialized volunteers.

Conférence RRC

Indian Ocean Disaster Risk Reduction Conference

On October 13, to celebrate the International Day of DRR, PIROI gathered actors from research, civil security and humanitarian action to reflect together on issues related to access to warning systems and information on disaster risks. This dialogue space composed of about one hundred participants and speakers has allowed to draw up an overview of warning systems in the countries of the South West Indian Ocean and to identify solutions to improve their access by the populations.

Paré pas Paré project: launch of a prevention campaign on the cyclonic risk

Paré pas Paré_Plan de travail 1
Since 2011, the Paré pas Paré project, embodied by the turtle Timoun, aims to raise awareness of natural hazards among the Reunionese population. Throughout the cyclone season, a prevention campaign is set up on the Paré pas Paré Facebook page where Timoun reminds the island's inhabitants what to do in case of a cyclone or associated risks (flooding or landslides).

Grand Raid 2022: raising public awareness of natural hazards

During the 30th edition of the Grand Raid, the famous ultra-trail of Reunion Island, the volunteers of the Paré pas Paré project were mobilized to raise awareness among runners and their supporters about the natural hazards present on the paths of the island. During the three days of the event, more than 500 people participated in the prevention activities.

Réunion des partenaires PIROI

Meeting of PIROI's member partners in La Réunion

On 8 and 9 November, the Red Cross/Red Crescent partners who are members of PIROI met in order to look back on the regional program achivements between 2019 and 2022 and to define the priorities for the 2023-2025 program. Considering the positive results of the twenty-two years of cooperation between the National Societies, the French Red Cross and the IFRC, the members decided to renew the mandate granted to the French Red Cross to coordinate the PIROI regional program.

A new project to support the Malagasy Red Cross

Ouverture délégation Madagascar
This year, the French Red Cross has reopened a delegation in Madagascar to accompany and support the Malagasy Red Cross. With the support of PIROI, this delegation will enable the implementation of a project financed by the European Union and conducted in consortium with the German and Luxembourg Red Cross. This project aims to accelerate local action in humanitarian and health crises and focuses on three pillars:

DISASTER RISK MANAGEMENT

EPIDEMIC PREPAREDNESS AND RESPONSE

CASH AND VOUCHER ASSISTANCE

Raising awareness and preparing communities in small
Island States

Initiated in 2019 with the support of the French Development Agency (AFD), the 3 Oceans project helps reduce the impact of disasters on populations in three ocean basins: the Southwest Indian Ocean, the Caribbean and the South Pacific. Through its Regional Response Platforms (PIROI, PIRAC, PIR South Pacific), the French Red Cross is strengthening the preparedness of National Societies and local and regional actors.
