Floods in Comoros: Red Crescent teams mobilized in Anjouan and Moheli

Last April, the islands of Anjouan and Moheli experienced exceptional rainy weather. To contribute to the recovery of the communities affected by the floods, the Comorian Red Crescent emergency response teams provided material and financial assistance to 89 affected families. These actions were carried out with the support of PIROI within the framework of an Indian Ocean Commission program funded by the European Union.

A look at Red Cross response to recent cyclones in Madagascar

During the 2021-2022 cyclone season, Madagascar faced six tropical systems in a period of three months. On the ground, the emergency response actions implemented by the Malagasy Red Cross were supported by the IFRC and PIROI, particularly in the supply of humanitarian materials distributed to the affected populations. To reinforce the efforts of the volunteers mobilized in these distributions, a PIROI emergency response team member was deployed to the operation in Mananjary.

Logistical preparedness: replenishing stocks before the next cyclone season

PIROI's member National Societies have been preparing for the next cyclone season. Within this framework, PIROI has restocked 80 tons of material in the 11 contingency warehouses in the region thanks to the support of its partners. This allows us to respond to the humanitarian needs of 45,000 people in the areas of housing reconstruction, hygiene, water, sanitation and basic necessities.

Software to optimise emergency stock management

Logiciel de gestion des stocks
To facilitate the logistical coordination of the warehouses and the follow-up of the pre-positioned material, PIROI has developed a stock management software. This digital tool implemented in each warehouse of the region allows a better visualization of stocks at the regional level. This project is supported by the Indian Ocean Commission and funded by the European Union.
HEALTH RISK MANAGEMENT

COVID-19: Donation of health protection equipment to Comorian authorities

The Comorian Red Crescent and the French Red Cross are continuing their mobilization in response to the COVID-19 crisis in the Union of the Comoros. With the support of the French Development Agency (AFD), hygiene and sanitary protection kits have been provided to the Regional Health Directorate of Grande Comore to prevent the risk of infection in the island's health centers.

Workshops on Disaster Law in Island States

In order to ensure support to disaster-affected communities, effective legal and policy frameworks are needed. To this end, IFRC organized two workshops in Seychelles from August 29 to September 2 with the support of PIROI and the Seychelles Red Cross:
- one on disaster law and legislative advocacy in island states ;
- and a second on building climate resilience in island states through disaster law.

Mozambique: Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment Training

Projet ECODRR Mozambique
As part of the AFD-supported ECO-DRR project, volunteers from the Mozambique Red Cross (Luabo local branch) were trained in the Enhanced Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (EVCa). A total of 20 participants were introduced to this approach, which provides a better understanding of the risks communities face and their capacities to take action to reduce disaster risks.

Mauritius: risk management training in schools

At the end of August, PIROI helped Mauritius Red Cross organise facilitator training for school-based risk management. The modules taught provided the 10 participants with the methodology and tools to assess disaster risks in schools. These facilitators will work closely with selected school committees and the Ministry of Education to update and test school emergency response plans.

Supporting National Societies’ skill building

PIROI’s range of training courses is designed to help the region’s National Societies build teams’ skills. Some sessions are offered in partnership with certified training organisations, such as the three courses available online from Bioforce Institut between September and November 2022. PIROI is supporting the participation of 18 National Society members in these courses, which focus on managing finances, projects, and teams.
