Progress report on construction of regional disaster risk management center

Construction work on the PIROI Center in Reunion Island began on March 6, 2023, and is progressing apace. In the space of six months, work on the foundations and shell (building structure) has been completed. At present, the focus is on installing the framework.

Simulation exercise: setting up a modular hospital

To be ready for an epidemic in the south-west Indian Ocean, PIROI - French Red Cross (FRC) recently acquired a modular hospital. This structure could be deployed to support an existing hospital in the event of a country in the region exceeding its health capacity.

Over the course of a week, our teams practiced assembling the hospital's various modules, with the aim of being ready for an emergency deployment.

Testing a new cyclone forecasting tool

As part of the PISSARO project, the Atmosphere and Cyclones Laboratory (LACy) and Météo-France have been working since 2020 on the development of a cyclone forecasting tool based on a monthly scale. This tool was tested during the previous cyclone season by PIROI - FRC, and demonstrated its effectiveness in providing early warnings and taking early action in the event of cyclone risk.

Volunteers in the Comoros receive emergency response training

Responding to disasters in an effective and coordinated way: this was the objective of the Comorian Red Crescent, in collaboration with PIROI - FRC, when it trained the local emergency response team of the Ngazidja branch (Grande Comore) last July. On the program: needs assessment, first aid, epidemic management, logistics, etc.

Deliver 50% of humanitarian aid via cash transfers by 2025

To achieve this goal, the Malagasy Red Cross is building the capacity of its staff and volunteers in cash transfer information management, with the support of the French Red Cross delegation in Madagascar and the European Union.

In the event of a disaster, humanitarian cash assistance can reach more people, more quickly and in a way that helps communities recover in dignity.

Tanzania: end of the Marburg virus epidemic

Between March and June 2023, Tanzania was hit by a virulent epidemic of the Marburg virus, with a mortality rate of up to 88%. As an auxiliary to the public authorities, the Tanzanian Red Cross mobilized its volunteers with IFRC support to assist the national authorities in the fight against the epidemic.

Development of first aid activities in Mauritius

Because all citizens have an essential role to play in the first-aid chain, the Mauritius Red Cross wishes to train as many people as possible in lifesaving techniques. Last July, PIROI - FRC and the IFRC World Reference Centre for First Aid carried out a diagnostic of the National Society's capacities, with a view to establishing a strategy for the development of first aid.

Mozambique: protecting against floods with nature-based solutions

In Lupita, in the Luabo district, a community faces recurrent flooding during the rainy season. To help it protect itself effectively, the Mozambique Red Cross and the French Red Cross delegation on site are supporting the community in setting up concrete actions, in particular with natural dykes.

Seychelles Red Cross volunteers mobilized in schools

Acculturation to natural hazards begins at school. With the support of its Ministry of Education, the Seychelles Red Cross has launched a series of awareness-raising activities in schools. Trained volunteers will be working with pupils in seven schools across the country over the coming months.

Natural hazard prevention in Mayotte

As part of the Maore dzi pangué awareness-raising project, French Red Cross volunteers are gearing up to raise awareness of natural hazards among the population of Mauritania: 17 volunteers were trained by PIROI - FRC last month and will be leading the three prevention events planned between now and the end of the year.

Raising awareness among Reunion's isolated populations

For three days, volunteers from the Paré pas Paré project surveyed the Mafate cirque, a location with difficult access conditions, to raise awareness and prepare the local population for disasters. Some thirty people took part in edutainment activities to help them better understand the natural hazards that surround them.
