Over 1 million Covid-19 masks delivered to 6 National Societies in the Indian Ocean region

envoi EPI
As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to circulate actively in the south-west Indian Ocean countries, PIROI has delivered a shipment of 1.2 million Covid-19 protective masks to support National Societies (NS) response activities in Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Tanzania and the Union of Comoros.

A modular hospital to respond to epidemic risks

In order to strengthen the capacity to respond to health crisis in the region, PIROI is acquiring an epidemic treatment centre (cholera, dengue, plague, Covid-19) to support existing hospital structures. This modular structure will allow for the treatment of at least 16 patients simultaneously.

Training of local emergency response teams

The NS have reinforced their training activities for local emergency response team members (BDRT). Since September 2021, four training courses have been organised with the support of PIROI in Atsinanana, Melaky (Madagascar), Moheli and Anjouan (Union of the Comoros), enabling the training of more than 70 BDRT team members through theoretical and practical training modules on disaster risk management.

Contingency planning at local NS branch level

In order to develop the capacities of the local branches of the NS, contingency planning workshops were organised during the last period. The Melaky and Atsinanana branches now have a Cyclone Contingency Plan (CP) while the branches of Moheli and Anjouan are in progress of finalising their Flood CP. The Cyclone CP in Rodrigues will be updated in early 2022.
These activities are implemented with the financial support of the European Union's Humanitarian Aid.

A prevention campaign about seismic-volcanic risk in Mayotte

With the discovery of the underwater volcano 50km from Mayotte, the associated seismic and tsunamic risks increase the vulnerability of the population. In order to raise awareness among the people of Mayotte on what to do in the event of a disaster, PIROI has joined a vast video prevention campaign broadcasted on television and social networks.
