As part of its Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) strategy for Reunion Island, PIROI supports the island’s local authorities in organising community preparedness and natural risk prevention actions. In February 2021, the partnership between the Commune of Saint-Benoît and PIROI was renewed to continue to pool their respective skills, knowledge and experience in order to strengthen the resilience of the population of Saint-Benoit to major natural hazards.

This partnership is implemented through the “Paré pas Paré” project with the collaboration of the Environment and Ecological Transition Department of the Saint-Benoît Town Hall on four levels:

  1. Risk prevention in schools: pupils in cycle 3 of the Commune of Saint-Benoît benefit from the school education program on the risks linked to natural hazards in Réunion.
  2. Raising awareness among the broad public: awareness-raising activities for the broad public are organised jointly with the Commune of Saint-Benoît using the prevention tools of the “Paré pas Paré” project.
  3. Training of municipal agents: basic training in major risks and climate change is developed for elected officials and agents of the Commune of Saint-Benoît to enable them to relay the prevention instructions to the population.
  4. Organisation of a simulation exercise: a practical exercise aimed at simulating the opening and management of an emergency accommodation centre will be organised as part of this partnership.

The actions carried out within the framework of this partnership are financed by the European Union under the INTERREG V bis Indian Ocean program.
