Strengthening preparedness and response capacities

Background

Communities in Small Island States in the south-west Indian Ocean are particularly vulnerable to climate change and to increasingly frequent and intense disasters related to natural and health hazards. These countries and territories are subject to the geographical pressure of rising sea levels on shorelines, as well as demographic problems due to high population density near the coast. Over the last decade, more than ten million people in the south-west Indian Ocean have been affected by natural disasters.

Project description

In order to reduce the vulnerability of the region’s communities, PIROI has launched a project to build the preparedness and response capacities for disaster risk management (DRM) stakeholders in the region. This project has been implemented as part of the Indian Ocean Commission’s Resilience Building and Disaster Response Management regional programme, with financial support from the European Union.

Project start date: March 2021
Project end date: March 2024
Duration: 3 years

Regions concerned:

Project goals:

  • Develop and improve regional resources dedicated to DRM and the impacts of climate change, including the design of a stock management tool for humanitarian logistics

  • Strengthen regional coordination between DRM stakeholders through networking and knowledge transfer, but also by contingency planning and simulation exercises

  • Improve the capacity of local stakeholders to support local populations, for example by promoting community-based disaster risk reduction activities.
