From 19 to 26 November, PIROI – in coordination with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) – organised a training course for emergency response team members in order to strengthen the teams who are deployed when a crisis or disaster occurs in the south-west Indian Ocean.

For 8 days in Reunion Island, PIROI trained 19 Red Cross/Red Crescent National Society volunteers and staff members from the region (Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Reunion and Mayotte) in emergency needs assessment, as well as in planning and implementing emergency response.

Using a combination of theory and practical simulation exercises, the course content addressed the various stages of emergency humanitarian response. Participants are now able to assess humanitarian needs in the aftermath of a disaster, to plan and implement an operation in line with identified needs, and to distribute basic necessities.

As part of its mandate, PIROI works on building the capacity of Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies to manage natural risks, health crises, and the impacts of climate change. This is why PIROI participates year-round in training and developing emergency response teams at local, national, and regional level. Since 2008, 170 people who received training from PIROI have already joined the IFRC-coordinated regional emergency response team.

This training course was organised with the backing of Reunion Island’s Regional Council and the European Union’s INTERREG programme.
